Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside French warplanes in a joint strike targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syria operated by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The location, pinpointed through intelligence, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was positioned in hills just to the north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a number of entry passages providing entry to the facility... preliminary assessments are that the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the attack late on Saturday and each participating jet made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as Daesh - established jihadist rule over significant areas in Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action demonstrates our UK leadership, and resolve to operate in unison with allied nations, to stamp out any resurgence of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," the British Defence Secretary the minister remarked.

RAF aircraft have conducted surveillance missions over Syria to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State after its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank every member of British forces involved in this operation for their skill and their bravery," Healey added. "They were among a great many UK service members deployed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to take out dangerous terrorists who endanger our way of life, demonstrates how UK forces are prepared to act, continuously, ensuring Britain's security domestically and influential overseas."

During December, the United States armed forces carried out what it termed a "major assault" targeting Islamic State objectives in Syria, after an assault resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The UN reports IS still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in both countries.
