An Generosity of Strangers: The Way a Gentleman I Barely Knew Assisted Me Obtain the Position That Transformed My Existence

During the final years of the 1980s, I was beginning a low-cost journey to the European continent with a travel partner. Because my friend was interested in pursuing a master’s degree in NYC, we had planned a 14-day stopover there on the way to London.

We reached the student accommodation, a big multi-story edifice on the UWS called International House. After dropping our bags, we made our way to the canteen, where we grabbed food, sat down, and began chatting with other diners.

Sitting next to me was an individual of Iraqi origin studying engineering at Columbia University. He inquired what I did, and I told him that I had recently completed my studies with a science degree and had been conducting research using an electron microscope.

He mentioned that there was an microscopy facility at Columbia University – right next door to the school of engineering, which was the reason he was familiar with it. He suggested that I consider applying for a job with them. I chuckled at the suggestion, telling him that I was soon departing to Europe and, more critically, I didn’t have a US visa.

The next day I ventured out, returning to the canteen that after dark. The engineering student approached me and informed me that he had arranged an interview for me with the leader of the research team at Columbia. Since he had gone to the trouble, I went to the meeting – but immediately informed my host that I lacked the necessary visa, so I was likely not a suitable candidate.

Reflecting the city's spirit – a metropolis where everything seems achievable – she said: “That can be arranged. What's your start date?” I missed my plane to London.

I held that position for three years. A perk of the job was that I also received free tuition at Columbia, and I took advantage to complete a graduate degree in global studies.

I never saw that student again and I am unaware of his identity, but his selfless gesture altered my destiny in numerous aspects. I lacked the bravery or self-assurance to contact anyone at an prestigious college and ask for a job. Moreover, I had long dreamed to study abroad, but lacked the financial means without that educational benefit.

Critically, that job in New York led me to a role in Europe where I met my beautiful French husband, with whom I am raising four amazing children. It was a total sliding doors moment. That benevolent individual redirected my path in life, and I’m eternally thankful.
